Jewelry is made to be worn. A little attention to how you wear, store, and clean it can help keep each piece looking its best.

Everyday Care

Small habits can make a difference.

Where practical, remove your jewelry before:

  • showering;
  • swimming;
  • exercising;
  • sleeping;
  • applying perfume;
  • applying hairspray;
  • using lotions or creams; and
  • handling household cleaning products.

This helps reduce unnecessary exposure to moisture, chemicals, friction, and residue.

Put Jewelry On Last

A simple routine can help:

Get dressed first. Add jewelry last.

Perfume, cosmetics, hair products, and skincare can come into direct contact with jewelry when they are applied afterward.

Allow products to dry or absorb before putting on your jewelry.

Keep Pieces Separate

When jewelry is stored together, pieces can rub, tangle, or scratch each other.

Where possible:

  • store pieces individually;
  • close chains before storing them;
  • keep necklaces from tangling;
  • avoid piling rings, earrings, and chains together; and
  • use a dry jewelry box, pouch, or separate compartment.

This is especially useful for pieces with delicate surfaces or fine chains.

Keep It Dry

If your jewelry becomes wet, gently dry it before storing it.

Avoid leaving damp jewelry:

  • in a bathroom;
  • inside a wet pouch;
  • next to a sink; or
  • in another humid environment for extended periods.

Unless a specific product page explicitly states otherwise, do not assume a piece is waterproof or intended for continuous exposure to water.

Cleaning Your Jewelry

Care requirements can depend on the material, finish, construction, stones, and other product characteristics.

For general light cleaning, a soft, clean, dry cloth is usually the safest starting point.

Avoid aggressive cleaning methods unless the individual product instructions specifically permit them.

Do not automatically use:

  • abrasive cleaners;
  • polishing compounds;
  • bleach;
  • strong chemicals;
  • rough brushes; or
  • household cleaning products.

A cleaning method that works for one type of jewelry may not be appropriate for another.

Jewelry With Stones or Decorative Details

Pieces containing stones, settings, charms, or other decorative components should be handled with additional care.

Avoid:

  • pulling on individual details;
  • striking the piece against hard surfaces;
  • storing it under heavy objects; and
  • forcing a clasp, setting, or component that does not move normally.

If something appears loose or damaged, discontinue wearing the piece until you have assessed it.

Chains

Fine chains can become tangled or damaged when pulled.

Before storing a necklace or bracelet:

  1. make sure it is dry;
  2. close the clasp where practical;
  3. lay or store it without tight knots; and
  4. keep it separate from heavier jewelry.

If a chain becomes tangled, work slowly rather than pulling it apart with force.

Rings

Remove rings where practical before activities involving:

  • heavy lifting;
  • cleaning chemicals;
  • prolonged water exposure;
  • rough surfaces; or
  • activities likely to place pressure on the ring.

Do not force a ring onto or off your finger if it is unusually tight.

Earrings

Store earrings in pairs where possible.

For earrings with removable backs or closures, keep the components together so they are not lost.

Clean only according to the product-specific material and care information.

Natural Changes in Appearance

How a piece changes over time can depend on:

  • its actual material;
  • surface finish;
  • frequency of wear;
  • storage;
  • exposure to moisture;
  • cosmetic products;
  • skin contact; and

  • solid gold;

  • suitable for swimming; or
  • resistant to every cosmetic or chemical product.

Traveling With Jewelry

When traveling, keep jewelry protected from pressure and tangling.

A small jewelry case or separate soft compartments can make it easier to:

  • separate chains;
  • protect surfaces;
  • keep pairs together; and
  • reduce movement inside your luggage.

Avoid placing delicate pieces loose inside a bag.
